Reading in the Bathtub: 15+ Titles to Stock for Soaking

Taking a long soak in a bathtub seems to be a fading luxury these days. Not only are more people converting their bathtubs to showers, but there just doesn’t seem to be enough time to enjoy this relaxing pastime. The truth is that taking a bath does have health benefits: it can help you unwind, sleep better, lower your heart rate, relieve muscle pain and soothe irritated skin (and minds). That might be why homeowners are turning their bathrooms into home spas, complete with aromatherapy candles and soft music.

Regardless of whether your bathroom is a cramped space or a spacious retreat, if it’s got a tub, chances are you’ve enjoyed a good book with your soak. Reading is common in the bathroom, but these days, most people are using their smart phone or tablet to catch up. In fact, 75% of us bring our mobile phones into the bathroom. Nine in 10 check Facebook, roughly 40% read and send emails and, according to an Inc. poll, almost 50% of people read text messages in the bathroom.

If you’re considering a long soak and some quality reading time, leave your electronics somewhere else. In fact, there have been verified deaths caused by dropping a charging smart phone into the tub while bathing. So if you love to read in the tub, check out some of these printed titles to take with you:

Laughter is just good medicine

While a high percentage of people cry in the shower, that doesn’t mean we want to be brought to tears every time we bathe. Inject a little happiness into your day with books intended to make you laugh (or even laugh so hard, you cry).

  • Born Standing Up: A Comic’s Life(Steve Martin)
  • Bossy Pants(Tina Fey)
  • Little Victories(Jason Gay)
  • The 50 Funniest American Writers (Andy Borowitz)

Skimming the surface

Not everyone wants to dig into a novel while they relax. That said, sometimes thinking too much can ruin what should be a relaxing experience. Keep your mind occupied and relaxed at the same time by flipping through one of these:

Daydreamin’

The bathtub is a great place to daydream about getting away from it all. Whether you’ve got a travel bug, or just really need to get the heck out of dodge…

  • Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel 2018
  • Rick Steve’s pocket travel guides
  • Creative Dreaming(Patricia Garfield)

Learn-it-all’s

Some people just love to learn… even when they are otherwise occupied. If you’ve got a mind for Cliff Clavin-esque facts, check out any of these:

  • Ken Jennings’ Trivia Almanac
  • The World Almanac and book of facts
  • Kitchen Confidential: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly

Touchless reading

If you’re concerned about dropping your favorite book into the tub, here are a few, waterproof ideas for reading while in the tub:

  • A chalkboard wall (write your own quotes, sayings, trivia, etc.)
  • Newspaper print wallpaper
  • Framed magazine covers (Time, The New Yorker, etc.)
  • A printed shower curtain

(Not so) smart readers

While we strongly recommend not reading from an electronic device, here are a few appropriate titles for those who simply can’t part from their smart device, even for a soak in the tub (but please, no wires!):
