With all the options available when remodeling your bathroom, things can seem overwhelming. From choosing a paint finish, to designing your perfect shower, there are many aspects of a bathroom’s design that require your full attention, including choosing your bathroom tile colors. We’re here to help you narrow down the options by providing these six guidelines of what to consider when choosing tile colors for your bathroom:
Guidelines For Choosing Bathroom Tile Colors
Are you doing a full remodel, or a partial? With a full remodel, you’ll be able to completely coordinate the colors as you decorate and design. However, if you’re doing a partial remodel, it’s important to match the tile to the fixtures in your bathroom that won’t be changing. Do you have a white vanity? Cream toilet? Solid-colored counter? TOH design correspondent Carole Freehauf says, “Complex or colorful backsplashes look best with solid counters. That way they don’t clash with each other.” So whatever your permanent fixtures, find a tile that matches in both color and texture.
Color plays a huge role in the appearance of a bathroom, and the size of your room will effect how the color looks. Small bathrooms do better with lighter hues, because they better reflect light, visually increasing the space. Large, well-lit bathrooms, meanwhile, provide enough light on their own, allowing for bold, dark tile statements.
Where will your tiles be located in your bathroom? Floor tiles of an often used bathroom look best with a mottled pattern that hides grime and stains so that you aren’t stuck mopping it every single day. Meanwhile, accent walls in your shower or on sink backsplashes are a great location for bold, eye-catching mosaic tile to act as a statement in your bathroom.
When choosing your bathroom tile colors, keep in mind what mood you’re trying to invoke. Do you want a fun, energetic bathroom? Get bold tiles. Something bedazzling? Textured or sparkling tiles are sure to be eye-catching! Or, if are you looking for a calmer, peaceful respite, try pastel tiles. Lighter tiles create a calmer atmosphere.
Keep in mind that some glass tiles will show the color of the wall behind them, visually altering the color of your tile. To avoid this, first lay down a white thinset mastic.
How many different styles of tile are you hoping to include in your bathroom? We recommend no more than three, so that a bathroom can stay beautiful and cohesive. First, pick your favorite tile, and then find one or two that match or complement it. Wayfair offers this color guide to help you determine which colors look great together.
